Bitter Springs
The experience
Bitter Springs, in full
A few minutes from Mataranka township, Bitter Springs is the wilder of Elsey's two thermal sites: not a built pool but a warm, spring-fed creek you float along. Enter at the first platform, let the gentle current carry you downstream through water around 32°C, and climb out at the second — then walk the palm-shaded path back and do it again.
Facilities are deliberately basic — barbecues, picnic tables and composting toilets at the day-use area, and nothing else. That is the point. With a pool noodle for buoyancy it is magical, clear enough to snorkel, and quieter at the edges of the day than the contained Mataranka pool up the road.
Signature: The downstream drift between two platforms.
